Ear Savers Crochet Pattern

Hey Everyone! Well, this week will mark the two-month mark of quarantine here in NJ. We have had quiet a few family affected with the sickness and sadly, a couple lost their fight to COVID. I have been doing my best to stay focused, and keep my hands busy in these times. Stash diving has been proving quite successful and I have been eating through my worsted weight yarn to help those medical personnel on the front lines by making these ear savers. Ear Savers are great for people wearing masks for extended periods of time, have sensitive skin, or wear glasses and need to take added pressure off their ears. Simply put the Ear Saver across the back of your head and wrap the mask’s elastic band around each button.

My goal is to donate at the minimum of 100 Ear Savers, and am just about at the halfway mark. So far, 20 have gone to Morristown Medical Center, and 20 have gone to Chilton Hospital. This week, St Anthony’s Hospital of Warwick, Barefoot Rehabilitation Center and our Orthodontist’s office are on the list of shipments. While yarn is not a problem, there is an amazingly short supply of plastic 3/4″ and 1″ buttons. I’m finding that my only means of supply (Amazon) is now highly delayed. As a result, it’s a game of prepare and then wait. My next shipment isn’t due until sometime in June. If you would like to make Ear Savers for yourself, I have included the pattern below and a link to the pattern on Ravelry. Can’t crochet but still want one? No problem. I made Ear Savers specifically for public use and you can purchase them through my Etsy Page. For each one purchased, I donate and additional two to medical personnel.

What you’ll need: worsted weight yarn (about 10 yards) H or I crochet hook, tapestry needle, scissors
Make a slip knot but leave a long tail (we will be using this later to sew the buttons on)
Chain 23 stitches
Double Crochet in the 5th chain from hook and continue across in the next 17 chains leaving out the last stitch.
In the last stitch, you will make 6 Double Crochet Stitches. Note: this will turn your work to the bottom side of your starting chain, where you will work your next row.
Continue with your Double Crochet Stitches to the other side, once again leaving the last stitch empty.
Work 5 Double Crochet Stitches in the chain final stitch and attach it to your starting stitches with a slip knot.
Slip knot.
Be sure to once again leave a long tail to fasten your buttons on each end.
Weave in your ends using the tapestry needle and you’re done! Stay safe out there!
